Uninspiring editorial on civil unions @ Chicago Tribune

Men kissingThe Chicago Tribune recently posted this editorial in support of civil unions in Illinois. I find myself conflicted. I’m happy that the Trib has gone on record vocally supporting some form of gay rights yet unimpressed with the language used. The argument does little to persuade and falls short of recognizing that civil unions can only be an injured step towards the real goal of full marriage rights for same sex couples.

An editorial should fervently support an argument one way or the other. I should walk away passionately in agreement or disgust. I don’t mean to sound unappreciative, I would love for the Trib to continue publishing pro-gay rights pieces, yet in a world where Iowa can unanimously approve gay marriage rights, Vermont can override a governor’s veto blocking full marriage rights, and New York’s governor can garner national press pushing a gay marriage bill this editorial does little to inspire any real movement.

frosting ? whats that? you obviously know more about boobs than i. what do you think of the dress? i want to get some feedback on it.

on matters at hand, or at blog har har, i feel that the trib is of course liberal in their views and are out to support gay rights, they have a few gay employees/writers on staff that i know of. and with the modern trend of being more and more liberal and allowing gay rights of marriage that’s happening in various states they had to address those rights somehow. their use of language, i agree w. you, however is not up to par. i dont think they seem enthused to have gay rights it was merely only to bring the subject to some sort of light. i think they just want to keep it PC in bringing it up, but also keep it very conservative by not expanding on the idea

will comment on your boobs at your blog :)

i’m right there with you – i know that the trib is plenty liberal and they’ve come out in support of gay rights more strongly in the past. it may be that their shaky financial position has pushed them in the direction of not being so vocal for fear of alienating subscribers, but if that is the case this is one of the best examples of how losing the print media industry could really hurt the world.

if you look back to the editorial i linked to in the post just before this (http://www.thatdorkjordan.com/2009/04/28/great-editorial-on-upcoming-nh-gay-marriage-vote/) there is quite a bit of contrast between the trib ed and the editorial provided by the concord monitor.

We are near the end of the world. Homosexuality is a sin to GOD, and to self. Almost everything in nature was created in pair by GOD. By promoting homosexuality rights to a marriage will be and i shall say already is an abomination to humanities. Although i have conservative values, i am neither a conservative, nor a liberal. We need to be careful with the message we are sending to our kids on a daily basis. Wrong can never be right no matter how you look at it. You can learn from your wrongdoing; however, that does not make it right.
